Mrs. Dominguez is nice. She is our counselor and I went to her office once.

I love Hillcrest PDS!

Dolphin Dollars

Hello, my name is Hayden and in my class we are learning       about businesses! We got to make dollars and they are called Dolphin Dollars. We all got to write our own design and we did a vote. Then three were left and we voted again and two won! I was so mad that I lost. I wanted to do a do-over. The ones we picked won. We get paid Dolphin Dollars in our paycheck. We can earn Dolphin Dollars other days by being quiet and helping others. We got to create businesses to earn Dolphin Dollars, too. We will use Dolphin Dollars to pay Mrs. Holey's class and Mrs. Johnston's class at their businesses. We are making signs and commercials. I love Dolphin Dollars!

U-Swirl

Last week we went on our field trip! We went to a place called U-Swirl! We went behind the scenes to see how they make frozen yogurt. We got to see what was in the fridge. We got to see the melted yogurt. It looked weird! We got frozen yogurt and got to have as many toppings as we wanted! At U-Swirl we got to play games. We got to play Guess Who? and Battleship and all that stuff! One day you should go to U-Swirl!

* Special thanks to U-Swirl for letting us go behind the scenes to see how their business works! We are preparing for our First Grade Marketplace! Watch for more news to come! Enjoy the pictures!

Penguins

We are researching this week in class! My research is about penguins. Penguins can stay underwater for twenty-two minutes. The largest type of penguin is an Emperor Penguin. Most penguins can live to be fifteen to twenty years old! Penguins have long bodies and webbed feet. Penguins must watch out for a number of predators when they are in the water. Weasels, wild dogs and other birds often feed on penguin eggs. Penguins eat krill, squid, fish and crustaceans. Most penguins dive deep underwater to feed. Scientists believe that penguins have been on earth for millions of years. Penguins are great animals to learn about!

Jane Goodall

This week we are learning about Jane Goodall. Jane Goodall was a famous scientist that studied chimpanzees in Africa. When she was a little girl she had a toy chimp that made her love chimps. Its name was Jubilee. Other scientists thought that chimpanzees were different from humans but they were not so different. Jane learned they were like family, kind of like humans. They used tools to do things, like David Greybeard did when he used a stick to get food like termites. I hope you liked learning about Jane Goodall!

JFK's History

JFK was the thirty-fifth president of the United States of America. I chose this topic because he was my favorite president. His real name was John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Jr. John F. Kennedy was the youngest man to be elected president.  JFK was born in 1917 on  May 29. Kennedy was born in Brookline,Massachusetts. JFK's mom's name was Rose and his dad's name was Joseph. JFK went to Harvard. JFK graduated from Harvard in 1940. After Kennedy graduated Harvard he entered the navy. When the Japanese destroyer sank Kennedy's PT boat a person that was part of its crew was drowning, but Kennedy saved him. When Kennedy was swimming he swallowed so much salt water that when he finally got to land he got sick.

JFK had six dogs named Charlie, Pushinka, Strelka, Clipper, Shannon, and Wolf. JFK had one cat named Tom. JFK had one canary named Robin. He had two parakeets named Bluebell and Maybelle. JFK also had two hamsters named Debbie and Billie. JFK also had a rabbit named Zsazsa. Pushinka and Charlie had puppies named Butterfly, White Tips, Blackie, and Streaker, but they were given away to friends of the family. John had a wife named Jackie and a kid named Caroline. Caroline had two horses named Tex and Macaroni. Tex was a gift from LBJ (Lyndon Baines Johnson). Macaroni was part Shetland. Mrs. Kennedy had four horses named Rufus, Palamino, Sardar, and Arabian. Arabian was a gift from the president of  Pakistan.

John was assassinated in  Dallas, Texas, in 1963, on November 22. John Kennedy was also the youngest president to be assassinated. He was an important president and he was loved by a lot of people.

Bloom Where You're Planted

With spring right around the corner, we are getting our garden ready for our unit on plants and living things! Earlier this year we studied soil, and we spent some time in the garden collecting samples. We brought our samples into the classroom and used magnifying glasses to look at all the surprises we can find in soil! We will go back out to the garden this week to get our beds ready for planting!
